South Cerney Golf Club
A beautiful 6500 yard 18 hole golf course with refurbished club house and bar. We run the bar and Café 7 days a week, provide catering for golf members and market, plan and deliver functions and events. We can host up to 100 people for parties, weddings, wakes and corporates.
A well-renowned golf course in Swindon we market, plan and deliver functions and events across 2 interconnecting rooms and can host up to 120 people. We provide anything from buffets to formal dinners to a host of customers from golf members to major international corporations.

SCGC Case Study
South Cerney golf course is situated in the Cotswolds boasting a 6000 yard golf course, driving ranges and is open for its 500 members and visitors throughout the year.
The owners of the golf course had an issue. They have to provide a café/bar area for the members and visitors yet were not only losing money in their existing operation but left members and visitors with a sour taste in their mouth from a poor experience. The existing staff were working long hours and were disenchanted with the set-up feeling that they were not listened to and they had no expertise or leadership when needing help.
A golf club environment is unique in that the operation must be able to deliver a café/bar service yet ramp up significantly to provide formal premium golfing and non-golfing events. Sadly the existing operation struggled to do this and members of the club were hosting their events in other locations and simply choosing to take their business to another venue.
The basis of our solution and operation is to utilise existing staff to deliver the day café/bar trade and for this team to be ramped up in terms of expertise and staffing levels by our existing higher-level staff to deliver formal, premium events. In addition we would life the burden from the café staff onto another function to ensure effective co-ordination and communication.
Our TUPE process was clear when communicating with the staff with regard to our intention to take on the contract and what they could expect from us as a business. We gave a thorough outline of our business plan and what we would implement in order to drive the business forward and deliver our solution.
From a menu perspective we stuck to our routes giving a good selection of tasty, home-cooked golf classics (see Appendix 2) coupled with a plan to deliver weekly specials that added excitement and flavour into our café/bar. We invested in a pizza oven, carvery unit, hog roaster and numerous other appliances to enable us to deliver the services we needed to.
We took the decision to implement a local beer and Ale policy so we de-installed the usual brand names and installed new pumps, marketing and beer from Cotswold Brew co. and North Cotswold brewery. Alongside this we decided to opt for local spirits stocking Cotswold Gin and single malt whiskey and English Vodka.
Technology is a big part of our operation and we wanted to make each transaction seamless and accurate for our customers. With this in mind we installed a cloud-based till system that integrates with the payment card system and till printers. This system also enabled us to create a Loyalty points based system that has proved very popular. Alongside this we have installed digital signage utilising a cloud based digital signage system we can control from anywhere. This gives us a great space for our ever-changing specials board and to advertise our events such as Sunday Carvery, quiz Night and Flash Sales.
We spent time building relationships with the golf club staff and most importantly the key members and committee members. This gives is valuable insight and feedback into what we are doing and makes our job much easier! We re-invented all the golf club matches and events with the help of the committee members, creating a much more formal and premium style which has proven a great success.
Sales and Marketing
Our website and social media presence was also developed in order to be able to drive local marketing. Our brand stands alone alongside the golf club and we have effectively marketed our functions through these channels. Our off-site sales function not only accepts incoming enquiries but also actively promotes our services to cold customers generating more business for the club.
As a Result ….
The golf members are extremely happy with our operation as are the golf club owners. The members now have a fully functioning offering during the day and can trust us to deliver their events as and when required. Customer satisfaction has increased and we are delivering much requested events such as Sunday Carvery and quiz nights which have been sold out.
